One extra digit, a missing prefix, or a serial-number break can mean the difference between a five-minute repair and a return shipment. Start With the Number on the Old Part
The number stamped, cast, printed, or tagged on the removed component is usually your best starting point. Clean the part before reading it. An OEM number is the original equipment manufacturer reference. An aftermarket number is assigned by the replacement-part supplier. A cross-reference connects one number to another when both identify compatible parts.
That means a quality aftermarket replacement may not carry the same number as the original component. It may be listed by an OEM reference number, a supplier number, or both. This is normal, provided the listing confirms the correct application and specifications.
Be careful with the word “replaces.” A part that replaces an earlier number may be a supersession – an updated part intended to take the place of the original. Confirm the Machine Before Confirming the Part
Part numbers work best when matched with complete machine information. Before ordering, have the tractor or implement make, model, serial number, and, when available, engine model ready. For implements, identify the implement model and serial number rather than assuming the tractor brand tells the whole story.
Serial number breaks are especially common on tractors that stayed in production for several years. A water pump, alternator, clutch component, hydraulic filter, or steering part may change midway through a production run. Listings may say “up to serial number” or “from serial number.” That language is a hard fitment boundary, not a suggestion.
If the equipment has been repowered, modified, or repaired with components from another model, the machine serial number alone may not settle the question. In that case, the old part and its measurements become more important. Restoration tractors can be particularly tricky because prior owners may have installed later-service replacements, converted electrical systems, or swapped engines.
Check the Physical Details That Numbers Cannot Tell You
A correct-looking number should still be matched to the actual component. Compare mounting-hole count and spacing, overall length, shaft or bore diameter, thread size and pitch, pulley groove count, connector shape, hose-end style, and direction of rotation where applicable.
For filters, compare the thread, gasket outside diameter, gasket placement, height, bypass-valve requirements, and application. For hydraulic parts, verify port type and size as well as pressure rating. For electrical items, count terminals and compare the connector body, voltage, polarity, and mounting arrangement.
Photographs help, but they should support a specification check rather than replace one. Camera angles can hide a difference in offset, depth, or connector location. Measurements taken with a tape measure are better than guessing, while calipers are better still for shafts, seals, bearings, and threaded fittings.
Use Supersessions Carefully
Manufacturers replace old numbers for good reasons. The newer part may use an improved seal, a revised connector, a different supplier, or an updated material. If a listing identifies a direct replacement for your original number and matches the machine application, the newer number is normally the correct order.
The trade-off is that a superseded part can look different from what you removed. A new fuel lift pump may have a revised lever profile. A replacement alternator may use a different plug plus an adapter lead. A steering component may arrive with updated hardware. Read what is included and what must be reused from the original assembly.
Never force a replacement to fit because the old number appears in a broad cross-reference. If the mounting, ports, electrical connection, or dimensions disagree, stop and verify before installation. Forced fitment creates expensive damage fast.
Common Number-Reading Mistakes
The most common error is confusing similar characters. `0` and `O`, `1` and `I`, `5` and `S`, and `8` and `B` are easy to mix up on worn tags. Compare the questionable character with other known letters or numbers on the same label. If a number produces no result, test the likely alternate character one at a time.

Call for help when the original number is unreadable, the machine falls near a serial-number break, the replacement looks different, or the part is for a safety-critical system such as brakes, steering, hydraulics, or fuel delivery.
